Jamaica: freedom was organized, defended and remembered

Connect a Jamaican holiday with Maroon community-building, the struggle against plantation slavery and the people who demanded freedom. Start with the story closest to where you are staying.

Two things to know before you go

Nanny and Maroon resistance

Jamaica Information Service describes Nanny’s leadership among the Eastern Maroons during the First Maroon War. UNESCO’s Blue and John Crow Mountains account explains how trails, settlements and knowledge of the forest supported resistance and community survival.

Sam Sharpe and the west

Sam Sharpe helped organize resistance in 1831 among enslaved people in western Jamaica. The uprising began at Kensington Estate in St. James; he was executed in 1832. This gives Montego Bay and its surrounding parishes a history that reaches far beyond the beach.

Check your understanding: Are the Maroon wars and Sam Sharpe’s 1831 resistance the same event?

No. They involve different periods, communities and strategies. Comparing them helps explain the many ways people pursued freedom; one hero’s story cannot stand in for everyone’s experience.

Turn the reading into a meaningful visit

Before you go. Read one of the historical sources above and choose a question you want to explore.

While you are there. For a Montego Bay stay, ask about Sam Sharpe interpretation in St. James. Plan the Blue and John Crow Mountains as a separate journey in eastern Jamaica, with community-led interpretation and realistic travel time.

After the visit. Ask how freedom changed daily life, and whose voices a monument names or leaves out. Make time for Jamaican writers, musicians and community storytellers today, too.

BTC learning suggestions are optional itinerary ideas. Ask about paid local interpretation and how your visit supports the people doing that work. No museum visit, transport or excursion is included unless your booking explicitly lists it.

01 · Historical context

The history beneath the itinerary

The Blue and John Crow Mountains provided refuge for Indigenous Taíno people and for Maroons resisting enslavement. UNESCO recognizes the landscape’s cultural significance alongside its natural heritage. Trails, settlement places and living traditions help interpret the relationship between freedom and difficult terrain. This is a history of people making and defending communities, not simply escaping from one location to another.

Agency, resistance and remembrance

Seville Heritage Park offers another lens on colonial Jamaica, plantation life and the sugar economy. Its UNESCO record is a Tentative List entry, which is different from World Heritage inscription. Read the two landscapes together: one helps examine the organization of colonial labour; the other helps examine resistance and refuge. Neither replaces the voices of the communities who interpret these histories.

02 · Places to explore

Read the landscape

Blue and John Crow Mountains

Ask about appropriate heritage routes, local interpretation and permission before planning a community visit.

Seville Heritage Park

Explore how archaeology can recover evidence of everyday life beyond the great house and plantation owners’ records.

03 · Culture lives here

Make room for the present

Pair remembrance with Jamaican music, art and food on their own terms. Ask who creates the work and how your visit supports that work. Our existing Jamaica travel guide also covers practical planning and links to official entry information.

04 · Plan with care

Put the places in the right itinerary

Montego Bay, Seville and the Blue and John Crow Mountains are different parts of Jamaica. A mountain heritage visit is not automatically included in a north-coast resort event.

Tell your advisor which history you want to understand, how much time you want for reflection, and any access needs. Ask who will lead the interpretation and what is included in the quoted price. Museum visits and heritage experiences are confirmed only when listed in your booking.
